In the opening bout of the night, Darrius Little had four takedowns and a reversal to hand Flint Ray a 10-7 defeat at 133 pounds. Little improved to 2-0 on the season, while Ray dropped to 4-2.
The Wolfpack’s Dale Shull made it 7-0 with a dominant 9-0 major decision over Marty Carlson at 141. Shull took Carlson down to start the match and essentially rode him the entire first two periods, with Carlson penalized a point for stalling in the second period. Shull opened the third period with a reversal and a near fall, and got a ninth point with more than six minutes of advantage time. Shull improved to 2-0. Carlson fell to 13-4.
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard when Justin Morrill defeated Colton Palmer by injury default at the end of the first period. That cut the NC State lead to a point at 7-6. Morrill improved to 4-2. Palmer dropped to 1-1.
The Wolfpack’s Bobby Ward jumped to a big lead early in the 157-pound bout, recording two takedowns and a near fall in the first minute of the match, but then held on for dear life as Richard Winger kept fighting back. Winger scored an escape to open the second period, followed by a quick takedown to cut the lead to 9-6, but a late reversal made it 11-6, and Ward held on for an 11-8 decision, giving NC State a 10-6 lead in the team scoring. Ward’s decision lifted his record for the season to 2-0. Winger dropped to 7-5.
The Wolverines made it a one-point match with Monte Schmalhous’s 12-5 decision over the Pack’s Kasey Young. Schmalhaus scored four takedowns in the bout to slice NC State’s lead to 10-9. Schmalhaus improved to 8-2. Young slid to 0-2.
Utah Valley took the team lead 12-10 with Brad Darrington’s 4-2 decision over Quinton Godley in the second period of sudden victory. Both wrestlers had a single takedown in regulation, and one apiece in the 30-second periods between the two sudden victory periods. Darrington lifted his record to 6-1. Godley dropped to 0-2.
Casen Eldredge pushed the Wolverines’ lead to 16-10 with a 9-1 major decision over Jonathan Becker at 184 pounds. Eldredge got two near falls in an unusual bout that featured no takedowns for either wrestler. Eldredge improved to 8-1 with the win. Becker fell to 0-2.
The Wolverines put the bout away for all intents and purposes when 197-pounder Josh Wood took down NC State’s Andrew Tumlin with three seconds left in the bout to pull out a 9-8 decision. Tumlin had taken an 8-6 lead with a takedown with 40 seconds remaining, but Wood scored an escape with 21 seconds left, then got the buzzer-beating takedown to give Utah Valley a 19-10 team lead. Wood improved to 7-5 with the win. The loss was Tumlin’s first collegiate match.
Dylan Stadel scored a takedown in the last minute of the heavyweight bout, then held on after Bobby Isola’s escape to take a 3-2 decision and make 22-10. Stadel moved one match above the break-even mark at 5-4. Isola’s record dropped to 1-1
In the final match of the night, 11th-ranked Ben Kjar recorded three takedowns in the first period and one more in the second, then scored a quick reversal and a near fall in the third to take a 15-3 major decision over the Wolfpack’s Taylor Cummings. Kjar improved to 5-1. Cummings dropped to 1-1. The four points for the major decision made the final score 26-10.
Both teams will be in action Saturday at the NC State Open. The wrestling begins at 10 a.m. and admission is free to the public.
