Wolfpack Wrestling Notes: At 18-5, redshirt-senior Kody Hamrah needs two more victories to match his career high for wins in a season. Hamrah went 20-7 as a junior two years ago.
Senior 141-pounder Joe Caramanica became the 12th wrestler in program history to reach 80 victories for a career with his two wins in last weekend’s NC State Duals. Caramanica is 80-25 for his career. With 14 more dual matches plus postseason remaining, he has an outside shot at becoming just the second wrestler in NC State history to win 100 matches in a career. Former heavyweight national champion Sylvester Terkay (1990-93) is NC State’s all-time victory leader with 122.
With two more victories, junior 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell will join Caramanica in NC State’s 80-win club. Caldwell enters this weekend’s match with a sensational 78-11 mark for his career, which is tied for 14th in school history in career wins and is fourth in career won-lost percentage at .876. Terkay also leads in career winning percentage at .897 (122-14), followed by Tab Thacker at .889 (92-11-1), and Michael Stokes at .879 (68-8-3).
With 10 pins already this season, Caldwell has three of the top 11 single-season totals for pins. He had 10 as a freshman two years ago, then had 23 last season. Caldwell holds the school records for pins by a freshman and by a sophomore. The record for pins by a junior is 27 by Terkay in 1992. Terkay also holds the record for pins by a senior with 25 in 1993. Caldwell is slightly off the pace he set a year ago, when had 11 pins through his first 22 matches.
Caldwell entered the current season in third place for career pins with 33, and that has not changed. Terkay is the school career leader with 64, followed by Thacker with 54. Caldwell enters action vs. Hofstra with 43.
All 10 of Caldwell’s pins in 2008-09 have been first-period falls, including a pair of first-minute falls. For his career, 37 of Caldwell’s 43 pins have been in the first period, including 12 in the first minute and eight in the first 30 seconds. His fastest pin came in his first collegiate match, a 13-second pin of Campbell’s Kelin Bidelspach. That ranks as the fastest pin in school history. A year ago, Caldwell pinned eighth-ranked Jake Patacsil of Purdue in 19 seconds, and at the NCAA Championships he pinned No. 9 Kenneth Hashimoto of Northern Colorado in 28 seconds. Earlier this season, he pinned fourth-ranked Lance Palmer of Ohio State in 1:05.
Dating back to the final match of last season, Caldwell’s current winning streak stands at 23 matches. Terkay’s 41-0 season in 1993 marks the longest winning streak in school history.
