NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma won eight of 10 matches, including a medical default by NC State’s previously unbeaten Darrion Caldwell, and rolled to a 38-6 victory in a college wrestling dual match.
Oklahoma, ranked No. 12 in the latest NWCA national poll, improved to 15-1 with the win, while NC State fell to 4-9-1. The big news for NC State, however, was the loss by Caldwell, who was trailing OU’s Kyle Terry 5-0 in the second period when Caldwell suffered what appeared to be a back spasm. He was unable to continue and had to be carried from the mat.
Joey Fio got the Sooners off to a fast start by pinning NC State’s Grayson Mills at 2:39 in the 125-pound bout. Fio, ranked ninth in the latest NWCA poll, improved to 15-3 overall. The Wolfpack cut the lead in half at 6-3 thanks to a late comeback by Darrius Little at 133 pounds. Trailing Brian Little 3-1 early in the third period, Little scored an escape to cut the lead to 3-2, then won the bout with a late takedown, improving to 12-12 with the 4-3 decision.
The Sooners made it 9-3 in the team scoring with Seth Vernon’s 3-1 decision over 15th-ranked Joe Caramanica. Vernon got a takedown in the first period, then got an escape to start the third. The loss was the third in the last four matches for Caramanica, who fell to 11-3 with the defeat. Vernon improved to 13-6.
Caldwell’s shocking medical forfeit was next. The loss dropped his record to 28-1 and snapped his winning streak at 29 matches. Terry, ranked 13th in the latest poll, extended his winning streak to 21 matches and lifted his record to 21-1.
At 157, Oklahoma’s Chad Terry scored a pair of first-period takedowns and cruised to a 9-5 decision over the Wolfpack’s Kody Hamrah, who had his five-match winning streak snapped as he fell to 24-7. Terry improved to 16-3, and Oklahoma’s team lead increased to 18-3.
The OU team lead jumped to 23-3 with Ryan Smith’s 16-1 technical fall over Quinton Godley at 165. Freshman Jake Burge stopped the Oklahoma tide with a tidy 7-2 decision over Derek Peperas at 174 pounds. Burge, who improved to 15-7, recorded a pair of third-period takedowns to salt away the decision.
Peperas’s loss did not seem to faze the Sooners. 20th-ranked Patrick Flynn needed just 1:49 to pin Mark Jahad at 184 and give Oklahoma a 29-6 lead in the team scoring. Flynn improved his season record to 21-3. Eleventh-ranked Eric Lapotsky won by forfeit at 197 to give Oklahoma a 35-6 lead in the team scoring, and 19th-ranked Nathan Fernandez completed the romp with a 10-4 decision over Wolfpack heavyweight Bobby Isola.
NC State will return to action February 6 at North Carolina.
