Wrestling Comes Back To Sink Navy, 20-18

RALEIGH, N.C. Trailing 18-6 with three matches remaining, NC State’s Darrius Little and Joe Caramanica scored major decisions, and Darrion Caldwell applied the knockout punch with a pin to lift the Wolfpack past Navy 20-18 Saturday in college wrestling at Reynolds Coliseum.
The win snapped a five-match winless streak for the Pack, which improved to 4-8-1 with the victory. Navy, which lost to North Carolina earlier in the day, dropped to 5-7. The victory over the Midshipmen was NC State’s first since the 1997-98 season.
The match began at 157 pounds, and after a scoreless first period, Kody Hamrah of NC State and Joel Ahern of Navy combined to score 13 points in the second period on three takedowns, two reversals and three escapes. Hamrah took a 7-6 lead into the third and came away with an 8-6 decision and a 3-0 team lead for the Wolfpack. Hamrah improved to 24-6 while Ahern fell to 24-11.
At 165 pounds, Navy’s Matt DiMichiel spotted Ray Ward a 4-0 lead, then stormed back to take a 13-7 decision and tie the score at 3-3. DiMichiel upped his record to 22-11, while Ward fell to 3-7. Jake Burge broke the tie for the Wolfpack with a 2-1 decision in the second overtime against Navy’s Robby Neill. Burge improved to 14-7 while Neill fell to 7-10.
Casey Caldwell (21-11) pulled the Midshipmen back to a 6-6 tie with a 6-2 decision over Mark Jahad (2-8) at 184, and Philip Neese won by forfeit for the Middies at 197, opening up a 12-6 lead for the Naval Academy. Navy heavyweight Tyler Moyer (5-7) recorded a late takedown in the third period against the Wolfpack’s Bobby Isola (2-12) and held on for a 5-4 decision over that gave Navy a 15-6 lead. Allen Stein made it 18-6 with a 10-7 decision over Mike Moreno at 125 pounds, with three matches remaining. Stein improved to 10-9 with the win while Moreno dropped to 7-9.
Little got the comeback started with with a 15-6 major decision over Austin Clouse at 133. Little recorded six takedowns and a reversal to pick up the major, improving to 11-12 and dropping Clouse to 6-9. That trimmed the Navy lead to 18-10, and Caramanica, ranked No. 15 at 141, sliced four more points off the lead with an 8-0 major decision over John Majka. Caramanica had a reversal and a near fall in the second period, then rode Majka the entire third period to nail down the riding time. The loss snapped a two-match losing streak for Caramanica, who improved to 11-2.
With the Wolfpack down only four points, the third-ranked Caldwell did what he does best, pinning Kyle O’Neill in 1:35. The pin improved Caldwell to 28-0 for the season with 15 pins, all first-period falls. He has won 29 consecutive matches dating back to last season and now 48 pins for his career.
