RALEIGH, N.C. All-America 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell won twice to extend his winning streak, and Kody Hamrah and Jake Burge also won twice Saturday, but NC State was unable to capitalize, losing 26-16 to Wyoming before wrestling Liberty to a 22-22 tie at Reynolds Coliseum.
The loss and tie dropped NC State to 3-7-1 in dual matches for the season. Wyoming, which also defeated Liberty improved to 6-2. Liberty fell to 5-6-1.
NC State got wins from its big three in the loss to Wyoming. Joe Caramanica, ranked No. 11 nationally, scored a major decision over Cole Dallaserra at 141 pounds. Third-ranked Darrion Caldwell pinned Chase Smith at 1:41 in the 149 bout, and Kody Hamrah took a 3-2 decision over Eric Coxbill at 157. NC State led 13-7 at that point, and later got three points from freshman Jake Burge, who upset 17th-ranked Shane Onufer 5-2 at 174 pounds. The decision was the first career victory over a ranked opponent for Burge, a highly touted freshman for the Wolfpack.
That was all the points the Wolfpack scored, however. Wyoming, which improved to 6-2 by defeating Liberty and NC State, won five bouts against the Pack, including a major decision at 125, and got six points in the team scoring when NC State forfeited at 197.
The Pack jumped to a 22-7 lead over the Flames, thanks to Caldwell’s pin of Zach McCrey and decisions from Kody Hamrah (157), Ray Ward (165) and Jake Burge (174). Liberty climbed back into the match thanks to an injury default at 184 pounds and a forfeit by the Wolfpack at 197, although that offset Liberty’s forfeit at 125. The match came down to the heavyweight bout, and Patrick Walker handed Bobby Isola an 8-2 defeat to tie the team score at 22-22.
The shocker of the match was 11th-ranked Joe Caramanica’s 10-2 major-decision loss to Liberty’s Tim Harner at 141. The loss the first of the season for Caramanica, who fell to 10-1. Harner, who earlier defeated Wyoming’s Cole Dellaserra, improved to 15-7 with the victory over Caramanica.
Notes: With his two pins, Caldwell improved to 26-0 for the season and extended his winning streak to 27 matches, dating back to 2007-08. He also has recorded 13 pins this season, all first-period falls, and has 46 pins for his career, third in school history. Caldwell has 40 first-period pins in his career. He improved his career won-lost record to 82-11 and his career winning percentage to .882, which ranks third in school history. Caldwell’s 26-0 record represents the longest in-season winning streak by a Wolfpack wrestler since Sylvester Terkay went 41-0 and won the national championship in 1992-93.
Hamrah’s two decisions boosted his season record to 21-6, surpassing his career high for matches in a season. He went 20-7 as a junior two years ago. Hamrah improved to 69-27 for his career.
Burge’s victory over Onufer of Wyoming was NC State’s ninth victory over a ranked wrestler this season. Caldwell has six of the nine. NC State wrestlers won 13 matches against ranked opponents in 2007-08, and 17 in 2006-07,
