Duke Comeback Downs Wrestling, 26-22

RALEIGH, N.C. Five straight wins by Duke along with a forfeit by NC State allowed the Blue Devils to overcome a 22-6 deficit Wednesday night and take a 26-22 dual-match victory over the Wolfpack in the first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season for both teams. Duke improved tp 5-0 in dual matches while NC State fell to 3-6.
The bout started off with four straight pins. The Wolfpack’s Mike Moreno ended a frantic back-and-forth affair at 125 pounds with a sudden takedown and second-period pin of Duke’s Peter Terrezza, getting the fall at 4:34. Jack Anderson got the six points back for the Blue Devils with a quick pin of Daniel Brumfield at 133. Brumfield moved up from 125 pounds to fill in for Darrius Little, who failed to make weight. Anderson took Brumfield down a little more than a minute into the match and got a three-point near fall before recording the pin at 1:32.
NC State’s ranked duo of Joe Caramanica and Darrion Caldwell gave the Pack an 18-6 lead in the team scoring with falls at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Caramanica, ranked No. 11 nationally and unscored on in his previous three bouts, built an 11-0 lead over Spencer Jasper before pinning him at 4:57. Caramanica improved to 9-0 with the victory.
Caldwell came into the bout ranked third nationally and unbeated in 23 bouts. He wasted little time taking down Dan Adamo, then worked him for more than a minute before taking the pin at the 2:02 mark. The pin was Caldwell’s 11th of the season, all in the first period. It was his 44th career pin, and 38 have been first-period falls. Caldwell, 24-0 on the season, has a 25-match winning streak dating back to last season and is 80-11 for his career. He is the 12th NC State wrestler to reach the 80-win plateau for his career.
NC State’s Kody Hamrah and Duke’s Jared Sernoffsky broke the streak of consecutive pins. Hamrah used three takedowns and a near fall to easily hang a major decision on Sernoffsky, winning 10-1 to extend the Wolfpack’s team lead to 22-6.
Duke got back on the board with the match at 165 pounds, a 16-7 major decision for Aaron Glover over Quinton Godley. Glover had five takedowns and two near falls in the bout to pull the Blue Devils to within 12 points at 22-10. At 174, Jake Burge and Voris Tejada swapped escapes in regulation before going to overtime, tied at 1-1. The first one-minute sudden victory period failed to produce a winner, In the tiebreaker segment of overtime, Tejada produced an escape, then rode Burge for 30 seconds to come away with a 2-1 decision and trim the NC State lead to nine points at 22-13.
Duke’s John Barone ran his record to 26-5 with a 12-2 major decision over Mark Jahad at 184 pounds. Combined with the Wolfpack’s forfeit at 197, the Blue Devils took a one-point lead at 23-22 heading into the heavyweight bout, the final match of the evening. And Duke’s Konrad Dudziak, ranked fifth nationally, took a 3-2 thriller over Bobby Isola, getting a takedown in the first period and an escape to start the second. Isola recorded a pair of escapes.
NC State will return to action on Saturday, January 17, with dual matches against Liberty and Wyoming. Liberty and Wyoming will wrestle each other in a dual match prior to facing NC State. The first bout begins at noon.
