Wrestling Pinned 31-6 at No. 18 Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. Sophomore Ryan Patrovich recorded a tech fall and freshmen Steve Bonanno and Ben Clymer posted major decisions to lead 18th-ranked Hofstra to a 31-6 victory over NC State in college wrestling action Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports Complex. The Pride improved to 4-1 on the year in dual matches, while the Wolfpack slipped to 3-5.
NC State’s 1-2 punch of 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell and 141-pounder Joe Caramanica provided the only points in the team score for the Pack. Caramanica, ranked No. 12 nationally, improved to 8-0 with a 6-0 decision over redshirt-freshman Jostin Accordino. Caldwell, ranked third in the latest national polls, ran his record to 23-0 and his current winning streak to 24 with a 10-7 decision over redshirt-freshman P.J. Gillespie, who turned an easy win for Caldwell into a close bout with a three-point near fall in the match’s final 30 seconds.
NC State began the match by forfeiting at 197 pounds, giving Hofstra a quick 6-0 lead. The Pride never looked back. Hofstra freshman Jordan Enck (13-9) took a 4-2 lead after the one period and wound up with a 6-2 decision over Bobby Isola in the heavyweight bout. Freshman Steve Bonanno, ranked 16th, improved to 19-8 with a 9-1 major decision over the Wolfpack’s Mike Moreno (5-6) at 125 pounds. Bonanno scored six unanswered points in the second period to take control of the bout. At 133, 10th-ranked junior Lou Ruggirello cruised to an 11-4 victory over Wolfpack sophomore Darrius Little (10-9) to give the Pride a 16-0 advantage in the match.
Caramanica and Caldwell cut the deficit to 16-6 with their victories at 141 and 149, but Hofstra made it 19-6 when Jonny Bonilla-Bowman recorded an escape in the final minute and a takedown in the final two seconds to record a 10-9 victory over Kody Hamrah (18-6). At 165, 20th-ranked Ryan Patrovich cruised to a 15-0 tech fall victory over freshman Quinton Godley (9-13). Patrovich improved to 10-3 on the season.
Hofstra senior Alton Lucas, ranked 11th at 174 pounds, faced a stiff challenge from freshman Jake Burge (10-6) before pulling out a 6-3 victory. In the final match of the day, Pride freshman Ben Clymer picked up his eighth victory in his last 11 outings with a 10-0 major decision over senior Mark Jahad (1-4) at 184.
