RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball head coach Lisa Navas announced the team’s 2009 schedule on Thursday, Sept. 25. The challenging slate features 16 opponents that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including five that reached the super regionals and two that advanced to the Women’s College World Series.
“We’re excited to be playing a challenging schedule this upcoming season,” said Navas. “Although we have a young team, we felt like it was important to bump the schedule up a bit in an effort to improve our players and continue our tradition of playing against as many top teams as we can year in and year out.”
The Pack will play 16 postseason programs from last year; Brigham Young, California, Canisius, Cal State Fullerton, East Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Hofstra, Houston, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.
California, Houston, Oklahoma, UCLA and Virginia Tech all made the super regionals, while ULCA and Virginia Tech made it all they way to Okalahoma City, Okla.
State will take part in four challenging tournaments throughout the season, including its own Wolfpack Challenge, Feb. 27-March 1. Buffalo, Canisius, College of Charleston, Norte Dame and St. John’s round out the tournament field.
Aside from its own tournament, the Pack will also play at the Crowne Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas, the prestigious Palm Springs Softball Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
In ACC play, NC State will host Virginia, North Carolina and Florida State. The conference tournament will also be played on the Pack’s field, the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, May 8-10. This year marks the first that the tournament will be held in a single-elimination format.
Outside of conference action, State will host doubleheaders against Big Ten heavyweights Michigan State and Ohio State. The Pack will also welcome Siena, East Carolina, Fordham, Charleston Southern, Elon, Radford and Charlotte.
The series against ECU will be of the home-and-home variety, as State will return the favor with a trip to Greenville late in the season.
