RALEIGH, N.C. NC State’s Andre Brown and Jamelle Eugene have both been named to the 2008 Doak Walker Award watch list as announced by the Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum on Friday, Aug. 29. The award, presented annually to the nation’s top running back, will be handed out on Feb. 6, 2009 in Dallas, Texas.
A senior from Greenville, N.C., Brown ranks 12th in NC State history with 1,772 career yards, including 447 total a year ago despite missing four complete games with a foot injury. Against Wofford in ’07 Brown turned in the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career and put up three scores, tied as the fifth-best mark in school history. In the 08’ season opener at South Carolina he gained 101 yards on 21 carries. This marks Brown's second appearance on the Doak Walker Award watch list.
Eugene, a junior from Naples, Fla., has 726 yards in 24 career appearances. Last year he earned the team's Governor's Award for the Most Valuable Performer and started the last six games of the season. It was Eugene who carried the complete load at tailback after the injuries to Toney Baker and Brown, playing 445 snaps in the last seven games, 205 in his previous 17 contests. He had three 100-yard rushing contests, including a high of 159 yards in the win over North Carolina, which marked the third-best ever by a Wolfpack sophomore. His 172 carries on the year was the third-most ever for a sophomore.
