Bowens Out for the Season

NC State junior wide receiver Donald Bowens will miss the 2008 football season, head coach Tom O'Brien announced following the Wolfpack's third preseason scrimmage Friday night. Bowens, from St. Petersburg, Fla., was injured early in camp with what O'Brien described as a hairline fracture.
“Bowens is out he's done," O'Brien said. "He's got a fractured spine... well not a fractured spine I said that wrong. He has a hairline fracture. So he's out for the year.”
"It's tough on him. It's tough on us, he is our senior guy and our most experienced receiver coming back."
Bowens led the team in reception average at 15 yards-per-catch as a sophomore in 2007 and was named the ACC Co-Offensive Back of the Week for his performance against Virginia. Bowens hauled in 11 catches for 202 yards against the Cavaliers, the fifth-best reception and yardage totals in school history.
O'Brien was pleased with the defensive play in Friday night's scrimmage.
"I think the defense played very well," O'Brien said. "They were in different situations and whatever it was they made some plays tonight. Coupled with the fact this is the 30th pracice or so they have seen the offense they are ahead of the game. The offense has to be more precise."
Statistics from the third preseason scrimmage:
RUSHING
Brandon Barnes - 13 attempts for 77 yards
Curtis Underwood - 2 attempts for 26 yards
Jamelle Eugene - 9 attempts for 21 yards
KICKING
Josh Czajkowski - 1-of-3. Made: 29; Missed: 45, 29.
DEFENSE
Sterling Lucas - 5 tackles
Audi Augustin - 4 tackles, 2 for losses
Audie Cole - 4 tackles, 1 for loss
Nate Irving - 4 tackles
Leroy Burgess - 3 tackles, 3 for losses
