Campana One-Hitter Sits Down Yellow Jackets, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Lindsay Campana dazzled the crowd at Robert E. Taylor Stadium with a one-hit dismissal of Georgia Tech, 1-0, in the first round of the 2008 ACC Championships. Campana kept the Yellow Jackets bats at bay until the sixth, when Blair Shimandle cracked a two-out double that proved to be GT’s lone hit of the evening. In all she K’d six and walked one.
The victory pushes the Pack to 30-26, while the Ramblin’ Wreck falls to 30-29. State stays in the winners bracket at the conference battle royale, while the Yellow Jackets are now one loss away from elimination.
Campana moves to 18-17 with the decision, while Whitney Humphreys falls to 18-15.
The red and white offense struck out just once during the game, its lowest total all year.
Newly minted ACC Freshman of the Year Alyssa Allbritten put State up 1-zip in the top of the first with an RBI triple to the wall in right. Shanna Smith singled up the middle to leadoff, took second on an Ashleigh Davis sac-bunt and later scored on Allbritten’s three-bagger.
The Yellow Jackets got its first base runner at the onset of the bottom of the third when Campana dotted Amanda Crow, but she more than made up for it by fanning the next three batters.
State threatened by putting two on base in the top of the fourth, but the score didn’t evolve. Humphreys drilled Claudia Cooper and Mackenzie Mangum reached on a grounder to first that Whitney Haller couldn’t handle, but both were left stranded.
Crow drew a walk with two down in the bottom of the fifth, but Stephanie Butler sent a routine inning-ending grounder to the first-team All-ACC shortstop Smith.
Shimandle doubled to left with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to end Campana's no-hit bid, but Savannah Brown flew out to the warning track in center.
State will take on top-seeded North Carolina tomorrow, Friday, May 9, at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available via GoPack.com, while ACC Select will offer live video streaming.
