Clayton Shunick Named Second-Team, All-America

RALEIGH, N.C. Junior righthander Clayton Shunick was NC State’s hard-luck pitcher in 2008, but bad luck did not mean bad pitching. Collegiate Baseball magazine and Louisville Slugger understood this, and on Thursday recognized Shunick’s outstanding season by naming him to their 2008 All-America team. Collegiate Baseball named Shunick a second-team All-American.
A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Shunick has pitched a staff-high 89 1/3 innings and allowed just 23 runs, 21 earned, on 69 hits with 21 walks and 100 strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in his last two appearances, and is unscored-upon in his last 14 innings. His first four losses were by scores of 2-1, 3-2, 5-2 and 4-1. The NC State offense averages 6.9 runs per game. With average run support throughout the season, Shunick easily could be 11-1 or even 12-0.
Shunick has pitched into the sixth inning of 11 of his 12 starts, and has pitched into the seventh inning seven times. He has not allowed more than four runs in a game all season, and has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his 12 starts.
