RALEIGH, N.C. After picking up three wins in a crucial conference series against Georgia Tech over the weekend, NC State softball will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 8 at Radford. Game one will begin at 3 p.m., with the second showdown following around 5 p.m. Live stats for both affairs will be available via GoPack.com.
State (22-18, 6-6 ACC) is certainly enjoying an increase in long ball production as of late, belting 13 home runs in its last five games. Shanna Smith has gone deep four times, while Kristine Bechtholdt and Alyssa Allbritten have knocked out three each. Allbritten set a new school record for doubles in a season this past Sunday against Georgia Tech with her 14th two-bagger of the year.
Claudia Cooper certainly stepped up this past weekend against the Yellow Jackets, batting .600 with three hits, four RBIs, two runs scored and two gargantuan home runs. She is just one of several players that have been coming up with key at-bats as of late, including but certainly not limited to Mackenzie Mangum and Bridget Desbois.
The pitching remains solid as both Lindsay Campana (11-13) and Mendy McKenzie (11-5) hold 11 wins and identical 2.22 ERAs. Campana has seen more work, hurling 158.1 innings to McKenzie’s 121.2.
Radford (26-10) has dropped three of its last four games, but has won 11 of 14. Sarah Himan leads the Highlanders in batting average with a .398 clip and 41 hits, while Hope Creasy has 27 RBIs. Ashley Carlson (11-of-13) and Kristen Schifflett (9-of-13) may attempt to keep the Pack honest on the base path, as both serve as stolen base threats.
Ashley Taylor stands as the ace of Radford’s pitching staff, owning a 15-6 record with a 1.30 ERA in 140.1 innings of work. Rebecca Whaley is 9-4 with a 2.71 ERA, having tossed 80 frames.
State will return to the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium this weekend for a three-game ACC set against Maryland. The Pack and Terrapins will play two games on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 1 p.m., before bringing the series to a close with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 13.
Despite not serving as the last home game of the year for the Pack, Sunday will serve as Senior Day with festivities being held prior to first pitch.
