NC State football held its first scrimmage of the spring on a cool and rainy afternoon in Carter-Finley Stadium. Quarterback's Harrison Beck and Russell Wilson provided the fire power in the air, while running backs Jamelle Eugene and Andre Brown took care of the ground game. Owen Spencer led all wideouts with five catches, and Donald Bowens had a team high 74 yards receiving.
"We showed good effort and enthusiasm out there," head coach Tom O'Brien said after the closed scrimmage. "There are a lot of little things we have to take care of, but that comes with having young guys and unexperienced guys on the field. I told the team that it was important in how we progressed during the week heading into the first scrimmage."
Wilson was 12-of-18 passing for 177 yards to lead the quarterbacks, with Harrison Beck close behind while completing 9-of-14 for 146 yards. Justin Burke was 6-of-16 for 39 yards.
Eugene carried the ball 20 times for 65 yards, while Brown rushed for 46 yards on 17 attempts.
Spencer (five catches, 57 yards) and Bowens (two catches, 74 yards) led the receiving corps during the two hour scrimmage. Jay Smith (four catches, 54 yards) and Matt Kushner (four catches, 64 yards) each added four catches. Eugene (3-16), Steven Howard (three catches for 27 yards) and George Bryan (three catches for 41 yards) chipped in with three catches each.
Josh Czajkowski was 4-for-6 on field goal attempts, with a long of 40 yards. Bradley Pierson was 1-for-3 with a long of 29.
Defensively, linebacker Ray Michel and defensive lineman Markus Kuhn led the scrimmage with seven tackles. Kuhn added four tackles for loss, including two sacks, while Michel was credited with a tackle for loss.
Audie Cole, Keith Willis and Jeff Rieskamp each added a sack in addition to Kuhn's pair.
Dominque Ellis, DeAndre Morgan and Nate Irving notched interceptions during the first scrimmage.
NC State's annual spring football game will be held on Saturday, April 19.
