Baseball To Play Midweek Road Game at UNCG

RALEIGH, N.C. For the first time since the first week of the season, NC State will play only four games this week, beginning with a non-conference game Wednesday at UNC Greensboro. Wednesday’s game marks only the second midweek road game of the season for the Wolfpack, which earlier played at East Carolina on April 1.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Field. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and the broadcast will be available on-line at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.

Redshirt-sophomore lefthander Alex Sogard (2-1, 2.60) will start for NC State. UNCG’s pitching plans have not been announced.

NC State is coming off its third weekend series win in as many weeks. The Wolfpack defeated Virginia Tech two out of three games this weekend in Blacksburg, Va., and moved up to No. 22 in the latest national polls. The Pack has won 13 of its last 16 games and is 27-12 overall.

Senior outfielder/first baseman Ryan Pond leads the NC State offense. He is hitting .326 with six home runs and 33 RBIs, but the Wolfpack boasts a balanced attack. Junior first baseman Pat Ferguson (.356-7-20), senior right fielder Matt Payne (.356-4-30), junior center fielder Marcus Jones (.312-6-30) and junior outfielder/DH Jeremy Synan (.308-3-24) all have produced steadily for NC State this season.

In April, while the Pack has batted .343 as a team, Pond (.459-2-22), Ferguson (.438-5-9), senior shortstop Tommy Foschi (.348-0-13), Payne (.345-3-12), Jones (.316-3-14) and Synan (.305-3-13) all have swung hot bats.

UNCG comes into action this week at 24-14. The Spartans have a game Tuesday evening vs. Duke. UNCG is coming off a series win this past weekend at The Citadel. UNCG has won five of its last seven games, but lost six of seven and seven of nine prior to that. The Spartans are batting .305 as a team, led by senior first baseman Ricky Orton, who is hitting .377 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs, all team highs.Senior outfielder Greg Feltes (.317-9-30), senior infielder Matt Gaski (.320-4-24) and sophomore outfielder Corey Overholtzer (.333-2-23) have been the leading run producers for the Spartans.
