Raleigh, N.C. The 2007-08 NC State men’s basketball team gathered one last time on Sunday night, as the Pack held its annual year-end banquet at The State Club.
J.J. Hickson was presented with the David Thompson Award, given to the men’s basketball player who displayed exceptional skills, versatility, a high-level of productivity, and a winning attitude. Hickson was an unanimous selection to the ACC All-Freshman team, and was an honorable mention All-ACC. He became just the eighth freshman in ACC history to lead his team in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.5), and he led all ACC rookies in both categories as well.
Sophomore Trevor Ferguson and freshman Javier Gonzalez were each awarded the Most Improved Award, given to the player who increases his level of play throughout the course of the season.
Ferguson took advantage of his opportunities late in the season, as he increased his scoring average over the last five games of the season, including a career-best 17 against Florida State. Gonzalez took over the starting point guard position the final 10 games of his rookie season, and finished ninth in the ACC and first among freshman in conference games in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46).
Senior Chad Williams was presented with the Jon Speaks Best Teammate Award, awarded to the basketball player that displayed the best sportsmanship as voted by the team.
Freshman Tracy Smith was given the Jim Valvano Coaches Award. The award is given to the player whose performance expresses the highest level of team loyalty, education to his school, and an attitude and spirit that inspires his teammates to never give up.
The Pack also honored the three players who achieved a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. Junior Ben McCauley (Sport Management), junior Farnold Degand (Sociology), and freshman Javier Gonzalez (First Year College) were all given the Scholar Athlete Award.
