RALEIGH, N.C. RALEIGH, N.C. On Tuesday, NC State broke out the high-top stirrups for a win at East Carolina. Back home at Doak Field at Dail Park for a non-conference game against Elon on Wednesday, the Wolfpack put on its hitting shoes and thoroughly trounced an outstanding Phoenix team 12-0.
Overshadowed somewhat by the offensive onslaught, the Wolfpack pitching staff turned in an exceptional performance as well. Off to a 22-7 start, the Phoenix came into the Doak having won three games in a row and five of its last seven. Elon came into the game hitting .316 as a team and scoring more than eight runs a game. Nine innings later, Elon left the Doak having been shut out for the first time in 2008. Sam Brown (1-1) started an matched his career high with five innings pitched. He allowed four hits, walked one and fanned four. Alex Sogard, Jeff Stallings, Jason Zinser and Jake Buchanan followed Brown to the mound for one inning apiece and allowed just two Elon baserunners on a pair of walks by Zinser.
Wolfpack fans have grown accustomed to stellar pitching this season, however. Offensively, the crowd of 1,036 saw the Pack reach double-digit runs for the fifth time this season and the first since March 16 vs. Miami. The Wolfpack banged out a season-high 17 hits, including home runs by Devon Cartwright, Drew Martin, Ryan Pond, and a tape-measure blast to right by Jeremy Synan. NC State’s last four-homer game was April 15, 2007, at Miami.
The Pack got the game rolling with two runs in the first inning for the first time since March 8 vs. Virginia. Pond, who drove in four on the night, picked up both RBIs with a double that split the gap in left-center.
One run came across in the second inning on a balk, and Cartwright followed that with a two-run bomb to left to make it 5-0. Those five runs all were charged to Elon starter Cory Harrilchak (2-2), who worked 1 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, walked two and did not record a strikeout.
Martin’s sacrifice fly to right made it 6-0 after three innings. The Wolfpack did not score in the fourth, but a passed ball and Martin’s two-run blast in the fifth pushed the lead to 9-0, and Pond made it 11-0 with a two-run shot in the sixth. Synan finished off the scoring with a leadoff homer three-fourths of the way up the trees beyond the right-field fence in the bottom of the seventh.
NC State will return to action this weekend with a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series vs. Wake Forest. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on the internet at gopack.com through the Pack Pass package.
