RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State cracked the national rankings for the first time all season when it appeared at No. 24 in the Rivals.com poll, released early Monday afternoon. Collegiate Baseball checked in moments later with the Wolfpack at No. 28. Baseball America followed the trend, coming a few minutes later with NC State absent from its top 25.
While the polls have not given much love to NC State this season, the NCAA’s Ratings Performance Index (RPI), the much-heralded formula used by the selection committees in basketball and baseball in seeding the pairings for the NCAA’s postseason tournaments, has had the Wolfpack ranked highly most of the season.
The current RPI ratings, accoring to boydsworld.com, has NC State at No. 8 in the nation, with the Atlantic Coast Conference dominating the rankings as the top-rated individual conference. The Boyd’s World RPI had Florida State at No. 1, Miami at No. 2, North Carolina at No. 4, NC State at No. 8, and Georgia Tech at No. 10. Virginia is at No. 29 with Clemson at No. 36.
Boyd’s World is not the only website that puts out an approximated RPI (the NCAA does not release the baseball RPI during the season). Warrennolan.com has Florida State No. 1, followed by Miami at No. 2, North Carolina at No. 4, Georgia Tech at No. 8 and NC State at No. 9. Virginia was No. 24 and Clemson was No. 30.
East Carolina is at No. 6 in the Boyd’s World RPI, and recent NC State opponents UNC Wilmington (19), Coastal Carolina (18) and Elon (32) all figured prominently in the RPI ratings.
