RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wolfpack football team scrimmaged for two hours in Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with part of the workout taking place under heavy downpours and high winds. But despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Tom O’Brien’s team did a good job holding on to the ball, a key goal for his team this spring.
“It was another tough day,” said O’Brien following the scrimmage. “It was our second straight scrimmage in the rain, but the ball wasn’t on the ground much which is what we are looking for. They went hard and they are definitely getting more physical, which is another one of our goals for spring.”
Three quarterbacks worked for the Pack this afternoon, led statistically by redshirt sophomore Russell Wilson. Wilson completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for a gain of 172 yards. Redshirt sophomore Justin Burke threw 5-9 for 25 yards, while Harrison Beck went 4-15 for 45 yards.
The rushing game was led by walkon Ulysses Tuft, Jr., who gained 92 yards on 20 carries. Veteran Jamelle Eugene gained 42 tough yards on 18 rushes, while Wilson added 24 yards on three rushing plays.
Junior Donald Bowens led the receivers with five catches for 79 yards, while Darrell Davis had five grabs for a gain of 39 yards. Owen Spencer had four receptions for 34 yards, while tight end George Bryan was 3-22.
O’Brien was satisfied with the intensity level of the scrimmage and cited the team’s improvement since last week. “We improved on the little things since last week and we didn’t make the same mistakes. There were no glaring errors today.”
Defensively, true freshman Dwayne Maddox tied for the lead in tackles with eight from his linebacker spot, including a sack. Jeff Reiskamp also had eight stops, while DeAndre Morgan had seven. Jeremy Gray had a 12-yard sack and a 36-yard interception return, while J.R. Sweezy had another sack at defensive end.
O’Brien praised his kickers’ efforts in the workout, as Josh Czajkowski connected on three field goals of 37, 39 and 26 yards, missing only on a 46-yarder. Bradley Pierson was good on a 34-yard attempt.
The Pack will hold its annual Red/White spring game next Saturday, April 19, at 1 pm. “I hope it’s a dry day,” said O’Brien, “so we can get more done.”
