BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. What a difference a day made for the NC State women’s golf team at the 2008 Bryan National Collegiate.
After starting Saturday tied for sixth among the 18-team field and Lauren Doughtie in a tie for second overall, the Wolfpack struggled with a +34 (322) team score to fall all the way to 13th at +48 (302-322=624), while Doughtie fired an uncharacteristic +10 (82).
The Pack’s bright spot through 36 holes has been senior Stephanie Derrey, who followed up yesterday’s one-over 73 with an efficient three-over 75 to maintain her top-10 standing in a tie for 8th place at +4 (73-75=148).
Although Derrey struggled early by bogeying her first three holes, she rallied with a pair of birdies and was steady with 11 pars, including the final five holes of the day.
Joanna Saleeby posted the Wolfpack’s second best round on Saturday with a seven-over 79 and in the process moved up 15 spots on the leader board. The Raleigh, N.C., native will begin Sunday’s final round in a tie for 62nd at +18 (83-79=162).
Doughtie posted four double bogeys in her round today to drop back into a tie for 20th at +8 (70-82=152).
Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis leads the field at 5 (139) after a three-under 69 on Saturday. Duke’s Amanda Blumenhurst and College of Charleston’s Steffi Kirchmayr are tied at 1 (143).
Sophomore Emily Street had a tough day with a +14 (86) and is 78th overall at +22 (80-86=166).
Julie Saleeby sits tied for 79th at +23 (79-88=167).
Duke holds a one-shot lead at +22 (598) over Florida (599). Auburn is six shots back (604).
