The No. 37 NC State women's tennis team wasted little time in dispatching No. 51 Marshall on Friday evening at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center, 6-1. The Wolfpack (3-0) took the doubles point then claimed five of the six singles matches - including four in straight sets - to handle the Thundering Herd (4-2).
NC State jumped out to a quick start in doubles, taking No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point for an early lead.
Lenka Hojckova and Julia Roach improved to 3-0 on the season with an impressive 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Kristen Bleakley and Catherine Grotz were impressive in their first doubles match together, taking No. 3 doubles to secure the team point, 8-4, after running out to a 6-1 lead.
Berkeley Brock and Daria Petrovic lost at No. 1 doubles to the nation's No. 15 duo, Schmitt/Soor, 8-3.
In singles, Brock, ranked No. 97 by the ITA, cruised past Karolina Soor at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Brock won the first 11 games of the match before Soor won the second to last game of the match to avoid the shutout.
Grotz put the Pack up 3-0 with her solid win at No. 4 as she consistently frustrated Jeanne Schwartz for a straight set, 6-2, 7-5, win.
Hojckova was strong in her three-set victory, taking the first and third sets by a score of 6-2, sandwhiched around a 6-3 loss, to clinch the team win.
Petrovic, ranked No. 79 in singles, battled to a third set with No. 19 Kellie Schmitt, before falling. Petrovic rallied from a 6-0 setback in the opening set by taking the second, 6-4. She lost the final set, 6-2.
Roach got the Pack on the scoreboard again with a decisive, 6-2, 6-2 win. It was her 47th career win, just two shy of second place all-time for the Wolfpack. She needs 13 more wins in 18 regular season contests and postseason to become the all-time winningest singles player.
Barringer closed the 6-1 win for the Pack with a strong 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 6 singles.
The women's tennis team will be back in action on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3, as part of the Women's Tennis ACC/Big Ten challenge. NC State hosts No. 64 Minnesota at noon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
