NEWBERRY, S.C. A banged up and depleted NC State wresting team limped through a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena on the Newberry College campus. The Wolfpack, which fell to 1-4 in dual matches, defeated Seton Hill 33-12 in the first bout, but then fell 28-13 to host Newberry, ranked seventh nationally in Division II.
Taylor Cummngs, Darrius Little, Darrion Caldwell and Kody Hamrah all won twice in the doubleheader, and the Wolfpack went 9-1 in bouts from 125 through 157 pounds. The upper weights, however, were a different story. Freshman 174-pounder Jake Burge wrestled in the first bout with an illness but lost to Seton Hill’s Dan Matthews. Freshman 184-pounder Hank Penree missed bouts due to illness. Sophomore heavyweight Bobby Isola wrestled twice, but also is battling medical issues. And senior 141-pounder Joe Caramanica is still out while recovering from a preseason knee injury.
“The guys who were healthy and able to go out there, they all wrestled really well,” head coach Carter Jordan said. “They really did. Newberry is no pushover. They’re Division II, but they have a really good program for that level. We’re going through a difficult stretch right now with guys being unable to go out on the mat. Better to take our lumps now than later. I still like our team when we’re healthy. We just have to get healthy.”
NC State returns to action next weekend at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The tournament, the most prestigious in-season tournament in college wrestling, lasts all day Friday and Saturday, December 5-6.
