Wrestling Continues Dual-Match Season at Newberry

RALEIGH, N.C. The NC State wrestling team will seek its first victory of the 2008-09 dual-match season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match at Newberry.
The Wolfpack is 0-3 after a rigorous weekend in the ACC/Big Ten Clash in Chapel Hill. The Pack lost to a pair of ranked teams in No. 8 Illinois and No. 12 Wisconsin. NC State also lost to an unranked but solid Michigan State squad.
A Division II program, Newberry will not present nearly as rigorous a challenge as the three Big Ten opponents did, but Newberry is ranked seventh in Division II and should not be overlooked. Newberry features a pair of returning DII All-Americans in 197-pounder Keeno Griffin and heavyweight Cy Wainwright.
“We’ve wrestled Newberry in the past and we know that they’re very capable,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan says. “I’m sure a lot of people looked at Newberry on our schedule and figured it for a sure win, but it’s not. If we wrestle the way we did against Wisconsin, which was a close loss (20-15) to a national power, then we’ll be okay. We got after it in that match and wrestled really well. But we have to get after it, and I believe we will.”
The Wolfpack will be led by returning All-American Darrion Caldwell, who is a perfect 8-0 with three pins at 149 pounds, but is coming off a stinging 19-3 technical fall defeat at the hands of defending national champion Brent Metcalf at the NWCA All-Star Classic. The loss to Metcalf was officially an exhibition match, but Caldwell, who gave Metcalf his only defeat in 2007-08, certainly will remember it.
“That was a tough defeat for Darrion, but I have all the confidence in the world that he'll get over it and learn from it,” Jordan says. “Darrion is an All-American for a reason. He’s one of the best wrestlers we’ve ever had here, but he’s not satisfied with that. Darrion wants to be nothing less than the best there is, and he’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish that, beginning this weekend.”
