RALEIGH, N.C. Continuing a recent trend of signing at least one national-caliber recruit a year, NC State wrestling coach Carter Jordan signed Andrew Tumlin of Harrison (Ohio) High School during the fall signing period. Tumlin will enroll at NC State for the 2009-10 school year.
Tumlin, a 2008 NHSCA All-American, went undefeated during the regular season as a junior, compiling a 23-0 record at 189 pounds and advancing to the third round of the state championship meet before being upset, his only loss of the season. He recovered to win twice in the consolation round to finish third in the state with a 37-1 record. He was ranked sixth in the nation at 189 pounds by wrestlingusa.com, and HACKS magazine named him the Buckeye Wrestler of the Year.
“Andrew Tumlin is an outstanding wrestler and a great addition to our program,” Jordan said. “He’s had a great deal of success at the state, national and internation level. As we continue to build the talent level of our program, Andrew is exactly the kind of young man we look for each year.”
The 2008 campaign marked the third time in as many years that Tumlin has placed at the Ohio state tournament. He finished fifth at 215 pounds as a sophomore in 2007, and seventh at 215 as a freshman in 2006.The wrestlingusa site ranked him sixth in the country at 215 as a sophomore, whie intermatwrestle ranked him seventh that same year.
After wrestling at 215 pounds his first two seasons in high school, Tumlin dropped down from 215 pounds to 189 prior to the 2007-08 season. He figures to wrestle at 197 pounds at NC State.
Tumlin also has been active and successful in freestyle wrestling. He won the Cadet freestyle national championship in 2007 and wrestled freestyle in Beijing, China, during the World Junior Games in 2007.
Tumlin’s signing follows several high-profile national signings by the Wolfpack wrestling program in recent years. In recent years, Jordan has signed Jacob Burge of Mason, Mich.; Mike Moreno of Tucson, Ariz.; Bobby Isola of Orlando, Fla.; Darrion Caldwell of Rahway, N.J.; Ryan Goodman as a transfer from the University of Nebraska; Kody Hamrah of Middlesex, N.J.; and Joe Caramanica of Bethlehem, Pa.
"We've tried to sign one or two national-level recruits a year, and Andrew definitely fits the bill for us," Jordan said. "He also fills a need. Ryan Goodman is a senior so we're going to have a hole at 197. It's a big jump from high school, but we have faith that Andrew can make that jump and step right into the lineup for us."
