A year ago to the day, NC State’s Darrion Caldwell pinned Iowa’s Brent Metcalf in a dual match in Lakewood, Ohio. The pin took 100 seconds flat. It was the only loss Metcalf suffered on his way to a 35-1 record and the national championship at 149 pounds.
One year later and about 125 miles to the south, Metcalf got his revenge and then some, handing Caldwell the first technical fall and the worst defeat of his college career, 19-3 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic. The match, held at St. John’s Arena on the Ohio State campus, ended less than a minute into the third and final period.
“Give Metcalf credit,” Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. “He really took it to Darrion.”
The match began with Caldwell and Metcalf sparring back and forth through most of the rest of the first period before Metcalf hit a high crotch open shot, took Caldwell down into a Turk with 40 seconds left in the period, and put him on his back for a three-point near fall. Metcalf rode Caldwell out for the rest of the period to lead 5-0 after one.
Caldwell began the second period in the down position, and Metcalf quickly turned him for another near fall before Caldwell escaped. Metcalf took Caldwell down again, cut him loose, then got another takedown right into a two-point near fall at the end of the period, which ended with Metcalf holding a 14-2 lead.
Trailing by 12 points, Caldwell had no choice but to start the third period in the neutral position, and Metcalf used two takedowns and riding time to complete the technical fall.
“Darrion will get over this,” Jordan said. “He’s a winner with the heart of a champion. He’ll be back. Metcalf had a year to make adjustments and figure out how to beat Darrion. Now it’s our turn to figure him out before nationals.”
