Burleson, Rivers Overpower Thompson in 4th Red-White Game

Thompson, surrounded by freshmen and potential starter Morris Rivers, scored 30 points for the White team, but it was not nearly enough as the Red team led by Tommy Burleson, Monte Towe and Tim Stoddard rolled to a 92-85 victory Saturday night on the campus of UNC-Asheville.
It was the third intra-squad game in four days for the weary Wolfpack, which played Wednesday night in
The team plays two more Red & White games, one Tuesday in Charlotte and one Saturday at Raleigh’s Reynolds Coliseum, before its final preseason tune-up Dec. 1 against Athletes In Action. The Wolfpack opens regular-season play on Dec. 5 against East Carolina in
Thompson, the junior All-America candidate, was held to eight points in the first half, as the Red team jumped out to a 50-37 lead at intermission. He pumped in 22 in the second half, but by then the outcome had been virtually decided by then.
Burleson had 28 points in the game. He and junior college transfer Phil Spence each had 12 rebounds for the Red team. Junior Tim Stoddard had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with 18 points for the White team.
The fifth Red & White game will be played Tuesday at 8 p.m. at UNC-Charlotte's gym in Charlotte.
