Thompson's Homecoming Not So Grand

SHELBY, N.C. This was not the homecoming David Thompson expected.
Thompson, a junior All-America forward for NC State’s second-ranked basketball team, returned to the place where he first became a superstar, at Shelby’s Crest High School.
He scored 29 points in the intra-squad scrimmage, but his White team fell 107-89 to the Red team, which was led by senior Tommy Burleson’s 29 points. The Red team also got strong play from junior forward Tim Stoddard, who scored 20 points. Junior college transfer Phil Spence added 16, junior Mark Moeller had 15, junior Monte Towe had 12 and freshman Bill Lake added 11, as the Red team overwhelmed the home-town hero.
Thompson, who grew up not far from the Crest campus in Boiling Springs, struggled to find his range on the court where he first became famous. He made only 12 of 30 shots on the night.
Meanwhile, Burleson made 14 of his 17 shots on the night and the Red team shot an unbelievable 71.2 percent from the field. It also out-rebounded the White team 27-20.
Thompson didn’t have much time to visit with family and friends: The Wolfpack left immediately for Saturday’s game in Asheville, the squad’s third intra-squad scrimmage in five days in three different cities.
