KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Lauren Doughtie came from behind in grand fashion on Sunday to earn medalist honors at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships at Fox Run Golf Course.
Louisville’s Cindy LaCrosse led Doughtie by one stroke heading to No. 18. Playing in the same group, LaCrosse double bogeyed the par-5 hole when she put her approach shot in the water, while Doughtie reached the green in two and two-putted to win her first collegiate tournament in her senior season with the Wolfpack.
A Suffolk, Va., native, Doughtie recorded her second four-under-par round of 68 in the past three days. Her winning score of -7 (68-73-68=209) is an NC State record and the best score in the 12-year history of the tournament.
Doughtie birdied No. 1 and bogeyed No. 7 to make the turn at even. Her round got going when she eagled No. 10 for the second time in three rounds. In fact, she had two of the four eagles throughout the entire tournament. Then it was a birdie at No. 12 to get to three-under, but a bogey moved her a stroke back setting up the heroic finish. First it was a birdie at the par-3 16th and then her birdie at 18 for the victory.
As a team, the Wolfpack tied rival North Carolina for second place among the 18-team field with a school-record team score of +10 (290-293-291=874) 10 shots better than the previous 54-hole standard score set during the 2004 ACC Championship. In addition, it was the first time the Pack has ever shot sub-300 scores all three days of a 54-hole tourney.
LSU blistered the course on Sunday with a 7 (281) team score to finish nine strokes ahead of the field at +1 (865) for the tournament.
Freshman Meghan Chapman had the best round of her brief collegiate career with a three-under-par 69, which vaulted her 32 spots on the leaderboard as she finished tied for 28th overall at +7 (78-76-69=223). After nine pars on the front, she turned it on with four birdies on the back nine to shoot 33 over her final nine holes and record her first top-30 finish in three career events.
Emily Street began the day tied for 10th at even-par for the tournament positioned nicely for a third career top-10 showing. Although that didn’t happen, she birdied No. 18 to finish at four-over-par 76 on Sunday and placed inside the top-20 in a tie for 19th at +4 (72-72-76=220). Far and away her best 54-hole score of the fall.
Joanna Saleeby had her best showing off the weekend with a six over-par 78 to finish 86th at +28 (79-87-78=244). She started well with a birdie at No. 2 to get her round going in the right direction. From there she had nine pars and seven bogeys on Sunday.
Younger sister Julie Saleeby put together consecutive rounds of even-par 72 on Friday and Saturday, but had a much tougher go at it today with an eight-over-par 80. The Raleigh, N.C., native tied for 34th overall at +8 (72-72-80=224) after beginning the day in the top-10.
Doughtie, the schools leader in nearly every statistical category, became the first golfer in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships last year. She had finished as the runner-up in two collegiate tournaments, before finally breaking through this weekend to become just the third individual champions in school history joining Beth Schumacher and current Wolfpack assistant coach Ashlee Dean.
