Brown, Bowens Top 100 Yards in Second Scrimmage
8/12/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football
Junior running back Andre Brown rushed for 100 yards and sophomore wideout Donald Bowens chipped in 110 yards receiving to pace the offense in the Wolfpack's second scrimmage of the fall on Sunday evening.
"They competed hard tonight," head coach Tom O'Brien said. "We changed it more to a game situation, so I thought that we were a little leg weary right now but that is understandable. They went after each other and did a pretty nice job tonight."
Brown needed just 12 carries to reach the 100-yard mark and chipped in a 26-yard touchdown run for a score. Fellow junior Toney Baker added 45 yards on nine carries, while redshirt sophomore Jamelle Eugene gained 23 yards on 13 rushes.
"We have good backs and sometimes they can make people miss and make good things happen," O'Brien continued. "I think Andre had a good night today, but he didn't the first [scrimmage] ... the second [scrimmage] he did."
The quarterbacks continued to compete, with Harrison Beck, Justin Burke and Daniel Evans each throwing for over 66 yards. Beck led the team with 100 passing yards, but was 4-of-14 with three interceptions.
Burke was 9-of-17 for 69 yards and Evans was 6-of-12 for 66 yards and one interception. Freshman Russell Wilson also got approximately 10 snaps and completed both of his attempts for 58 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown to fellow rookie Steven Howard.
"I'm not ready to make any comment one way or another about the quarterbacks," O'Brien said. "We'll take a look at the tape and see what we have to do."
The defense was led by leading tackler DaJuan Morgan, who notched eight stops and an interception. In addition, J.C. Neal, Nate Irving and Phillip Holloman each added an interception during the scrimmage.
"We've been intercepting balls, we've been getting our hands on balls, we've been making plays on balls and creating field position," O'Brien said. "Then the offense can score those touchdowns that they did because they don't have to go as far.
"They are seeing the ball and they are making a break on it. That's the key right now. They are in a position to make those plays."
NC State will next hit the practice field on Tuesday for another two-a-day, the third of the season so far.
