Lauren Doughtie Falls in Virginia Amateur Final

RICHMOND Sarah Harvey notched a 3 and 2 victory over NC State rising junior Lauren Doughtie to win the scheduled 18-hole final at the 82nd Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.
A rising sophomore at Harvard, Harvey won four consecutive holes during an important outward half stretch to build a 3-up lead at the turn and take home her first Kohler Trophy.
Doughtie owned an early 1-up lead after sticking a great iron tee shot to 4 inches at the par-3 fourth hole. Her opponent would later recover by taking four consecutive holes from Nos. 6-9.
As had been her strategy for the week, Doughtie remained patient and won Nos. 10 and 12 to get within one. She knocked in a 15-footer for birdie at the par-4 10th. Harvey then pulled her second shot way left at the par-4 12th hole and missed her 12-foot attempt for par. There, Doughtie holed her 6-foot par putt for the win.
First to putt at the next hole, Doughtie had a great opportunity to square the match at the downhill par-4 13th, but her 7-foot birdie putt from left of the cup caught the lower lip and spun out.
“That was the deciding thing that switched the match back in her favor,” Doughtie would later comment. Harvey’s chance from just inside of her opponent missed left.
With her lead still at 1 up, Harvey would push her edge back to 2 up at the par-3 14th converting a two-putt from a slippery place 20 feet above the hole. Doughtie battled the putter in the match and just missed on her 4-footer for a halve.
After the finalists halved No. 15 with two-putt pars, Doughtie went for the green in two at the par-5 16th, but she pushed the fairway wood shot slightly right and the ball came to rest in a difficult spot against a rake on the grassy downslope of a greenside bunker right rather than rolling into the sand.
Steady for much of the day, Harvey played her second at No. 16 to a comfortable lay-up distance and cleanly struck her pitching wedge from 106 yards to 20 feet past the hole. Faced with a severe downslope, Doughtie hit her third into the bunker, before blasting out to 14 feet. After missing her par putt and not converting the ensuing bogey chance, she conceded the hole to her opponent, ending the match.
“I definitely didn’t make the putts today that I did the rest of the week,” Doughtie said. “I think I’m learning my lesson, though. Today, Sarah’s putts dropped. Hopefully mine do the next time.”
