Orioles Tab McConnell In 10th Round of MLB Draft

RALEIGH, N.C. With Andrew Brackman off the table, taken in the first round by the New York Yankees, righthanded pitcher Eryk McConnell became the second NC State player taken in the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The Baltimore Orioles took McConnell in the 10th round of the draft with the 309th pick overall. A redshirt-junior from Waynesville, N.C., McConnell fashioned a spectacular season at the back end of the NC State bullpen, going 3-2 with a 1.72 ERA and 11 saves in 13 attempts. McConnell made 28 appearances and worked 52 1/3 innings. He allowed 43 hits, walked 11 and notched 35 strikeouts.
Senior catcher Caleb Mangum went to the Philadelphia Phillied in the 24th round, with the 743rd overall pick. Two rounds later, the San Francisco Giants took junior shortstop Ramon Corona with the 794th overall pick. Mangum batted .285 with eight home runs and 48 RBIs. Corona batted .293, hit three home runs and drove in 39.
