Vying for a spot on the 2007 USA Baseball roster, NC State lefthander Eric Surkamp started and pitched two no-hit innings Tuesday night vs. the Oil Can Boyd All-Stars in an exhibition game in Pittsfield, Mass.
Surkamp, a rising junior who earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2007, walked one and struck out three. Surkamp is one of 10 players competing for two spots on the non-Pan Am Games roster for the ’07 national team. The two players chosen will be alternates for the Pan Am Games. Wolfpack lefthander Jimmy Gillheeney, a rising sophomore, also is among the 10 players vying for the two alternate spots on the USA Baseball roster.
Surkamp, from Cincinnati, Ohio, went 4-5 with a 3.47 ERA as a sophomore in 2007. Gillheeney, from Providence, R.I., was 4-3, 6.36.
The two alternate spots on the USA roster will be announced on Monday, June 25.
