Doughtie Remains Tied For Lead At Eastern Golf Amateur

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. NC State rising junior Lauren Doughtie remained tied for the lead after two rounds at the 2007 Women’s Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Independence Golf Club.
Among the 80 competing golfers, Doughtie is tied with Amber Littman after 36 holes of the the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Doughtie shot a second round 72 and is at 142 (70-72) for the tournament. Littman, who hails from Stoney Creek, N.C., fired a 68 in round two for the low round of the tournament.
NC State rising sophomores Kristen Vincent and Kathleen Strandberg are also competing in the championship. Vincent is seven shots back of the leaders at 149 (77-72), while Strandberg is at 153 (78-75).
The championship is open to female amateur golfers, with a certified handicap index of 11.5 or less and who belong to a WEGA Member Club (or have school affiliation). Clubs and schools in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and the District of Columbia are eligible to join the Association.
The Women's Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship is one of the oldest and most prestigious women's amateur championships in the United States dating back to 1906. It is one of the few major women's amateur championships that is played in stroke-play format. The United States Golf Association takes into account a player's performance in the WEGA Amateur Championship when making its selection for The Curtis Cup team. The Curtis Cup is the biennial amateur competition between Great Britain and the United States.
The championship continues through Thursday, June 14.
