RALEIGH, N.C. Caleb Mangum went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and four RBIs to help push NC State past UNC Wilmington, 6-1, on Wednesday, April 15, at Doak Field at Dail Park. Clayton Shunick (4-2) grabbed the win, allowing just one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched, while Andrew Morgan (0-1) took the loss. With the victory the Pack jumps to 28-14 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 19-24.
UNCW got up early, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the second. Jonathan Batts got hit by a Nate Karns pitch, and then moved along to second on a base hit into center by Daniel Hargrave. Karns followed that by drilling Jes Snyder to load the bases with no outs.
Mark Carver relieved some stress with a pop out to Dallas Poulk at second and Bobby Leeper followed by sending a fielder’s choice back to Poulk, who threw out Batts at home. But Karns failed to keep the Seahawks off of the scoreboard, walking Nate Hall and pushing Hargrave across the plate.
The lead didn’t last long, however, as State immediately tied things up in the bottom half of the inning. Ramon Corona singled to left to start things off and Ryan Howard moved him to second with a sac-bunt down the third base line. Corona then took third on a wild pitch to Poulk and later scored on a Matt Payne RBI single into center.
After hitting a third batter and issuing another walk in the top of the third, head coach Elliott Avent removed Karns and put Shunick on the hill. Shunick answered the call, promptly retiring two Seahawks to end the inning.
Mangum put the Pack up 4-1 in the bottom of the third with a three-run bomb over the wall in left.
State added another run on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Gutierrez knocked a leadoff double and then took third as Joe Florio beat out a sac-bunt attempt for an infield single. Mangum followed with a base hit into left, scoring Gutierrez.
The Pack pushed the score to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Jeremy Synan hit a leadoff single into right and later scored on a wild pitch to Drew Martin.
Kyle Rutter tossed the ninth for the Wolfpack, sitting down the Seahawks in order.
NC State will return to work this weekend, hosting rival No. 4 North Carolina for three games. The Pack and the Tar Heels will play 7 p.m. affairs on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, before ending the series on Sunday, April 29, with a 1:30 p.m. afternoon finale.
