RALEIGH, N.C. — With only five of the next 11 games at home and in the midst of a stretch of 11 out of 17 games away from home, the NC State baseball team needs to take advantage of every home game it can, beginning Wednesday night against UNC Greensboro. The Wolfpack and Spartans will square off at Doak Field at Dail Park beginning at 6 p.m. in the first home night game of the season.
At 18-8 overall, NC State has won two of its last three games and seven of its last nine. The Pack took two of three this past weekend at Wake Forest, and three of its next four Atlantic Coast Conference series will be on the road. The Pack has 16 home games remaining, beginning with the UNCG game.
ON THE MOUND: Junior righthander Jeff Stallings (2-0, 3.33) will pitch this evening for the Wolfpack against UNC Greensboro. Stallings’ last appearance was to face two batters on Friday at Wake Forest. His last start was March 18 vs. Virginia Tech, and he lasted 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. In his last three starts, Stallings has allowed six runs on 16 hits in 10 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. He did not figure in the decision in any of the three. His ERA in those three games was 5.06.
NC STATE VS. UNC GREENSBORO: The Wolfpack has won 19 of the 23 games played between NC State and UNC Greensboro. The Spartans snapped a 12-game winning streak in the series for NC State by handing the Pack a 10-8 defeat on March 6 in Greensboro. Adam Deleo went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Spartans, who scored seven runs in the fifth inning, one of just nine times all season that an opponent has scored more than two runs in an inning against the Wolfpack.
HE’S NO. 2 AND CLOSING IN ON 400: Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent heads into action this evening vs. UNCG with a 396-243 record in his 10-plus seasons at NC State. The Wolfpack’s 3-2 victory March 25 at Wake Forest pushed Avent past Ray Tanner and into second place for career wins among NC State baseball coaches. Tanner went 395-173 in his nine years as the Wolfpack’s head coach before he moved on to South Carolina following the 1996 season. Avent now is four wins shy of joining Sam Esposito as the only two coaches in Wolfpack history with 400 wins at the school. Esposito’s career record, which came entirely at NC State, was 513-253 from 1967-87. Avent’s overall career record stands at 621-454 in 18-plus seasons. Avent first became a head coach at New Mexico State in 1989.
HOME TURF: Since Doak Field underwent a $5 million renovation during the 2003-04 seasons, NC State has been tough to beat at home. Although the Wolfpack played 10 games at the Doak in 2003 and 27 more in 2004, those games were played while the ballpark was under construction. The 2005 season was the first for the new Doak Field at Dail Park, and the Pack protected its home field well, posting a 27-5 record at home, the fifth best home record since Doak Field first opened in 1966. The Pack went 24-7 at home a year ago and is 13-3 at the Doak this season. That makes NC State 64-15 at home since Doak Field at Dail Park re-opened in 2005, an .810 winning percentage.
UP NEXT: NC State travels to Boston College this weekend for a three-game ACC series. The Wolfpack takes a 5-4 conference record into the series, while the Eagles come in at 4-5. BC has played ACC series at Duke, Georgia Tech and Florida State. Friday’s game will mark the home opener for Boston College. Game times are at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on WKNC (88.1 FM) and on-line at gopack.com through Pack Pass.
