RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State softball team, currently ranked No. 22 nationally in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll, will begin its fourth season of play this Friday, Feb. 9, at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Hosted by North Carolina, the Carolina Classic will be held on the UNC campus with the majority of games being played on Williams Field at Anderson Stadium. NC State owns an 8-2 record at North Carolina, falling once to the Tar Heels in 2004 and dropping a game to Florida State in last year's ACC Tournament. The Pack eventually got even with the Seminoles, beating them in the championship game to gain its first league crown.
The tournament field boasts nine teams, including Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Gardner-Webb, North Carolina, NC State, Ohio, Penn State and No. 2 Tennessee. In all, the squads will play 18 contests over the course of the three-day span. Parking and admission are both free, and concessions will be available for attendees.
The Pack will begin its quest for a repeat performance of last year's success with a 12:30 p.m. game against Ohio on Friday. On Saturday, Feb. 10, the red and white will take on Penn State at 12:30 p.m., before battling Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. The tournament draws to a close on Sunday, Feb. 11, with NC State pitted against Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
NC State will not play College of Charleston, East Carolina, North Carolina or Tennessee.
All of the Pack's opponents will be opening their season at the tournament. The Ohio Bobcats, picked No. 4 preseason in the MAC conference, will take on East Carolina in its first game, while the Big Ten's Penn State Nittany Lions won't begin competition until Saturday against No. 2 Tennessee. The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic Sun conference, will take on East Carolina first, and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers of the Big South conference, picked No. 2 preseason, will also open with No. 2 Tennessee.
After capturing its first-ever ACC softball championship a year ago, NC State was tabbed the preseason favorite for 2007, as determined by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.
Sixteen letterwinners are back for the Wolfpack this year, including Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region second-team pick and ACC tournament MVP Shaina Ervin. The pitcher from Huntersville, N.C., was instrumental in helping NC State claim its league championship in 2006 with a 4-1 win over Florida State in the title game. The Pack also made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Navas was named coach of the year last season in the ACC, while her staff picked up coaching staff of the year honors for the NFCA southeast region.
NC State also boasts top returnees in two-time all-conference first-teamer Abbie Sims, two-time All-ACC performer Jen Chamberlin and all-tournament selections Miranda Ervin and Shanna Smith.
