NC State Wrestling To Host Rematch With UNC Wednesday

RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State and North Carolina hold the distinction of being the only two wrestling programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference to face one another twice a year every year. UNC won the first meeting this year by a 16-14 score in Chapel Hill. The Wolfpack will host the rematch at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Pack and Heels have combined to win every ACC championship since 1977, with North Carolina winning 18 times, NC State 12. In head-to-head matchups dating back to 1973-74, UNC holds a 36-28-1 advantage over the Wolfpack. The two squads are an even 16-16 at Reynolds Coliseum over that span. NC State has won eight of the last 16 matches, one of which ended in a tie.
NC State is coming off a thrilling 22-18 victory at 18th-ranked Indiana this past Saturday. Trailing 18-13 in the team scoring with just two bouts remaining, the Wolfpack got a pin from 197-pounder Ryan Goodman to take a 19-18 lead, then won the match when Jainor Palma got a takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the heavyweight bout for a 4-3 decision. The win over the Hoosiers snapped a three-match losing streak for the Pack, which wrestled well in two of the three losses.
“We’re wrestling very well right now,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “We wrestled very well against an outstanding Navy team and just lost, and I thought we took the fight to Maryland in almost every match but just couldn’t come away with points. The win over Indiana was a great win for the kids, a real breakthrough. They showed a tremendous amount of character. Now, we just have to keep it going against North Carolina.
In Chapel Hill on January 19, Drew Forshey sealed the victory for North Carolina with a 9-2 decision over Taylor Cummings at 125 pounds, the final bout of the night. The two teams split the 10 bouts evenly, but Robert McCarthy won a 10-0 major decision over NC State’s Jeremy Colbert at 184 for an extra team point, and Mike Rappo scored four points in the final 20 seconds of Darrion Caldwell’s 16-9 victory at 141, turning a potential major decision into a decision, denying the Wolfpack a team point. Those two bouts proved to be the difference in the final score, and a team point was deducted from NC State following Jainor Palma’s 4-2 decision over then-eighth-ranked Spencer Nadolsky in the second sudden victory period of the heavyweight bout. Turn those three points around and the Wolfpack would have come away with a 16-15 victory.
Notes: Jainor Palma’s victory over Josh Buuck of Indiana was Palma’s 69th career win at NC State, moving him into a four-way tie with Chris Kwortnik (1991-94), Steve Williams (1989-92) and Gregg Fatool (1982-85) for 20th place in career wins at NC State. Palma’s career record is 69-46. With his next victory, he will become the 20th wrestler in Wolfpack history to win 70 matches in a career.
• NC State now is 12-32 against ranked opponents this season, easily the most wins over ranked opponents since the media relations office began tracking that in 1998-99. In fact, the Wolfpack won just 12 matches against ranked opponents over the last three seasons combined.
