RALEIGH, N.C. — With a productive weekend at Baseball at the Beach in the scorebook, the NC State baseball team returns home from Myrtle Beach this week to take on UNC Wilimington on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The Wolfpack, 8-1 after taking two of three games over the weekend, takes on the Seahawks, 5-6, for the first of three meetings this season. NC State will send freshman lefthander Jimmy Gillheeney (0-0, 0.00) to the mound to face UNCW righthander Jeff Hatcher (1-0, 5.59). The Seahawks’ losing record is in part due to a demanding early-season schedule. UNCW has lost to then-No. 30 Oklahoma, No. 4 South Carolina and No. 1 North Carolina. The Seahawks defeated No. 12 TCU during Baseball at the Beach this past weekend at Myrtle Beach.
THE SERIES: NC State leads the series 54-13, including a 14-3 mark in the last 17 meetings. The Seahawks defeated the Wolfpack 5-3 last May 10 in Wilimington behind a two-run homer from Jonathan Batts and a two-run double from John Raynor. Brian Aragon had three hits and an RBI for NC State, and Ryan Pond had a pair of singles in four at-bats. NC State won the other meeting between the two last season, 9-8 on February 26 in the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville. Matt Camp hit a two-run homer, Caleb Mangum went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Ammer Cabrera, Andrew Taylor and Sam Walls pitched three scoreless innings in relief to hold off the Seahawks.
TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER: Freshman lefty Jimmy Gillheeney has been excellent for NC State, working nine scoreless innings over three appearances, all in relief. He has retired 26 of the 32 men he has faced, allowing four hits while walking two and striking out eight. He has no decisions, but has recorded one save.
STARTING PITCHING: NC State’s starting pitchers have a 7-1 record and a 2.11 ERA in 42 2/3 innings. The starters have allowed 35 hits, walked 11 and struck out 43. Andrew Brackman is 3-0 with a 0.52 ERA to lead the starting pitchers.
RELIEF PITCHING: NC State’s relief pitchers are 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA and five saves in 37 1/3 innings. The bullpen has allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on 24 hits, walking six and striking out 29.
WALKS: NC State pitching has allowed more than three walks in a game just once this season, and not coincidentally, that was the one game the Wolfpack lost, 5-3 on Sunday to TCU. The staff has a 4.2:1 ratio of strikeouts to walks and has allowed just 17 walks in 80 innings, which is less than two per game. Coming into action today vs. UNC Wilmington, NC State pitchers have walked just seven of the last 168 batters they have faced.
HOT START: NC State’s eight conseutive wins to start the season goes down as the second-best start to a season in the Elliott Avent era. The 2004 team won its first 11 games, one short of the school record of 12, set in 1992.
POLLS: NC State has made a small jump in the national polls following its 2-1 weekend at Baseball at the Beach. The Wolfpack moved from No. 26 to No. 25 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, and went from unranked to No. 24 in Baseball America.
UP NEXT: NC State travels to Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville this weekend for the 2007 Keith LeClair Classic. The Wolfpack will play Western Carolina on Friday at 1 p.m., East Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m., and No. 13 Pepperdine on Sunday at 11 a.m.
