RALEIGH, N.C. Since becoming NC State wrestling coach three years ago, Carter Jordan has had an impressive run on the recruiting trail. Jordan continued that this November when he signed Jacob Burge of Mason High School in Lansing, Mich., to a grant-in-aid.
Burge, the defending Michigan 2-A state champion at 160 pounds, has fashioned an impressive career for himself at Mason High. He is 153-9 in three years with the Mason varsity, and in addition to winning the state title as a junior, he finished third as a freshman and sophomore.
“Jacob Burge is an outstanding wrestler and an outstanding person,” Jordan said. “We’re tremendously excited to have him as part of our program.”
Burge was ranked No. 9 nationally among juniors in his weight class by Intermat.com following the 2006-07 season. He won the national championship at 163 pounds in the Brute-adidas Folkstyle Nationals this past April and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament’s junior division.
Earlier this fall, Burge won the championship at 171 pounds in the Super 32 Challenge in Greensboro, defeating Edward Ruth of Pennsylvania 5-4 in the finals. Ruth was ranked No. 15 nationally by WIN magazine. Burge cruised through three matches the first day of the tournament, winning by fall, technical fall and major decision without giving up so much as a takedown. In winning the championship, Burge became only the second wrestler from Michigan to win a Super 32 championship.
Burge’s most impressive accomplishment to date, however, was his fourth-place finish at 174 pounds November 3 at the Michigan State Open. Wrestling against college freshmen and sophomores at the MSU Open, Burge won four of six matches, including two by fall.
“We’ve strived over the last several years to improve our national profile in recruiting,” Jordan said. “We signed Ryan Goodman three years ago, Darrion Caldwell two years ago, and Mike Moreno, Colton Palmer and Bobby Isola last fall. That’s five very impressive young men, and Jacob Burge fits right in with those guys. He’s a quality kid and a quality addition to our program.”
