Caramanica Takes Third At Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. Joe Caramanica recovered from a technical fall in the semifinals of the championship bracket at the Southern Scuffle with a pair of decisions over tough competition to take third place at 141 pounds. Caramanica defeated Chris Diaz of Virginia Tech and Chris Bencivenga of UNC Greensboro to move through the final two legs of the wrestlebacks.
Meanwhile, Kody Hamrah and Ryan Goodman split their last two bouts to take fourth place at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively. Hamrah, wrestling unattached, took a 7-6 decision over Bloomsburg's Matt Moley before being pinned by Tyler Sherfey of Boise State. Goodman pinned Virginia Tech's Tommy Spellman, but dropped a 5-3 decision to Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro in the bout for third place.
NC State finished 13th in the team scoring.
"We were hoping that at least one of these guys would make the finals, but I don't recall ever having this many guys place at this tournament, so I'm pretty happy overall with our performance," Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. "We also had some younger guys gain some valuable experience. I've felt good about the direction of the program for some time now, and I didn't see anything this weekend to make me feel otherwise. We have a lot of work left to do, but we have a chance to be a very good wrestling team."
Caldwell, who lost by fall to Boston University’s Mike Roberts in the first round of the tournament, was making an impressive run through the wrestlebacks prior to running into Erwin. Caldwell concluded Saturday’s action with a 23-second pin of The Citadel’s Derek Royster, and began Sunday by pinning Maryland’s Steve Fehnel in 1:34. The two pins give Caldwell 20 for his brief career, ranking him eighth in NC State history in career falls.
Earlier Sunday, Taylor Cummings (125 pounds), Randy Goodman (174), Mark Jahad (197) and Bobby Isola (heavyweight) lost in the wrestleback bracket and were eliminated from the tournament.
