The National College Baseball Writers Association on Wednesday named NC State senior righthander Eryk McConnell to its 2008 preseason All-America team.
McConnell, who went 3-2 with 11 saves and a 1.72 ERA as the Wolfpack’s closer in 2007, will move to the starting rotation for his senior year. He was named to the NCBWA’s first-team All-America team as a reliever.
McConnell came to NC State for the 2005-06 school year after attending Western Carolina for two years. He redshirted at WCU as a true freshman in 2004, then had Tommy John surgery in 2005 and did not pitch. Fully recovered for 2006, McConnell went 7-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 16 games as the Pack’s Sunday starter. This past season, he moved to the bullpen and earned third-team All-America honors. In 28 appearances, all in relief, he worked 52 1/3 innings, allowing 43 hits, walking 11 and striking out 35.
The Baltimore Orioles selected McConnell in the 10th round of the MLB’s 2007 First Year Player Draft, but the two sides were unable to agree on a contract, and McConnell returned to school.
McConnell is one of two Atlantic Coast Conference players named to the NCBWA first team. Virginia righthander Jacob Thompson was named as a starting pitcher.
