ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. The two hometown heroes put on a show. And so did just about everybody else, even without using the ACC’s experimental 3-point shot and 30-second clock.
An overflow crowd of 2,500 spectators jammed into
They weren’t disappointed, as
Of course, senior forward Thurl Bailey’s game-high 33 points and senior guard Dereck Whittenburg’s 20 helped as well. Bailey also added nine rebounds. Whittenburg returned to action after missing the first Red-White scrimmage following the extraction of two wisdom teeth.
Unlike last week’s initial Red-White contest at Reynolds Coliseum, this game was played without the ACC’s experimental rules, showing that the Wolfpack, last in the league last season in scoring, might offer a different kind of fire-power in Valvano’s third year as head coach. All league games will use the experimental rules, and opposing teams will have the option of using those rules in non-conference games.
Though the game was tight at the half, with the White holding a narrow 44-42 advantage, the White team gradually pulled away, holding a 10-point lead throughout the game’s final eight minutes.
Sophomore Lorenzo Charles led the Red team with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Ernie Myers had 19 points, junior forward Harold Thompson added 14 and sophomore center Cozell McQueen added 12 points.
Statistics other than scoring were not available.
The Wolfpack, 22-10 last year, will play its first game against outside competition on Saturday, Nov. 15, when it faces Marathon Oil at Reynolds Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
It will finish off the preseason with its final Red-White contest at
