Wrestling Drops Two At The Saint Edward Duals

Darrion Caldwell won three matches, including a first-period fall over sixth-ranked Brent Metcalf, but NC State dropped two of three matches Saturday at the Saint Edward Duals at Saint Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio. The Wolfpack won its opening match, 26-17 over Iowa Central, but dropped a 22-20 decision to Findlay University, then fell 37-9 to fourth-ranked Iowa.
The Wolfpack fell to 1-5 in dual matches for the season, all against difficult competiton. Central Iowa is the two-time defending juco national champion. Findlay is a perennial power in Division II. Previously, the Wolfpack dropped matches to Oklahoma, Purdue and Michigan State, all considered strong wrestling programs. The matches were the first of the season for Central Iowa, Findlay and Iowa.
Caldwell, who won twice by fall and once by technical fall in the three matches, improved to 8-1 on the season Six of his eight wins have been pins, all in hte first period. He pinned Iowa's Metcalf in 1:40. A week ago he pinned No. 8 Jake Patacsil of Purdue in 19 seconds. Caldwell entered action this week ranked 10th at 149 pounds.
NC State's other three points against the Hawkeyes were a result of Joe Caramanica's 9-2 decision over No. 20 Dan LeClere at 141 pounds. Caramanica, ranked No. 14, went 2-1 on the day and improved to 4-1 for the season.
NC State returns to action next weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cliff Keen Invitational is considered the top in-season college wrestling tournament in the country.
