Raleigh, N.C. NC State’s Brandon Costner has been named to the 2007-08 Wooden Award Pre-Season Watch List. The sophomore from Montclair, N.J., was one of 50 players named, and one of seven such players from the ACC.
Last season, Costner was named to the ACC All-Freshman team, and was also a third-team All-ACC selection. He was also a Freshman All-American according to collegeinsider.com, he earned third-team honors from collegehoops.net. The left-hander led all ACC freshmen throughout the year in both scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.3), and was tops on NC State in both categories as well. He was just the seventh freshman in ACC history to lead his team in both scoring and rebounding in his rookie season.
The list is composed of 50 student athletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most coveted trophy. These top 50 candidates are comprised of returning players. Transfers, freshmen, and medical redshirts are not eligible for this preseason list, but will be evaluated and considered for both the Midseason Top 30 list and the National Ballot. Players not on the preseason list are eligible for the midseason top 30 and ballot. Last year, Kevin Durant of the University of Texas was the first freshman to win the Wooden Award.
The Atlantic Coast Conference placed seven players on the 2007-08 pre-season Wooden Award watch list. The ACC was represented by Costner, North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson, Boston College’s Tyrese Rice, Duke’s DeMarcus Nelson, Maryland’s James Gist and Virginia’s Sean Singletary.
