Xavier Lee replaced starter Drew Weatherford in the second quarter and finished with 283 all-purpose yards while tossing two touchdown passes. Lee engineered an impressive 67-yard drive to open the second half for the game's first scorea 7-yard pass to De’Cody Faggand made things happen on the ground with a team-leading 59 rushing yards.
The performance was so impressive that Lee was named the ACC’s Co-Offensive Back of the Week, sharing the honor with
Lee brings a different look to the Seminoles offense. While Weatherford is more experienced (27 career starts), he’s a pocket passer with average mobility. Lee is more athletic and harder to blitz (he was not sacked by
Inconsistency has been his biggest problem. Lee started three straight games last season before losing the job following a sub-par performance in a home loss to

The quarterback position has not been the only concern. Injuries have forced FSU to mix and match on the offensive line. Right tackle David Overmyer, a third-year starter, missed most of the
Overall, FSU is averaging 66 snaps, 22 points and 337 yards per game.
The featured back is Smith. The 188 pound junior is averaging 59 yards rushing a game and also has 11 catches. Smith has accounted for 36 percent of FSU offensive plays this year. After two years as a reserve, Smith looks poised to have a break-out season.
Despite several injuries, the Seminoles defense has shown signs of performing like some of the dominant FSU units of the 1990’s. The Noles are holding opponents to only 17 points and 78 rushing yards a game. They’ve also forced 6 turnovers, including 2 interceptions.
Most of the injuries on defense have been up front. Nose guard, Budd Thacker, did not play against
A guy to watch is Brown (6-4, 255, So.). The Stantonsburg, NC native, who attended
Linebacker coach Chuck Amato has had to replace two starters from ’06. Sophomore Dekoda Watson has taken over for Pitsburgh Steelers’ first-round draft pick Lawrence Timmons. Second-year starter, Geno Hayes, is the other outside linebacker. He leads FSU with 5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
Middle linebacker, Derek Nicholson (6-2, 226, Jr.) has replaced Arizona Cardinals draft pick, Buster Davis. Nicholson suffered a season-ending knee injury against NC State in ’06, but has returned this year to lead the Noles in tackles (35).
The Seminoles secondary is also solid. All four starters return and there is plenty of depth.
Cornerback Tony Carter (5-9, 175, Jr.) is FSU’s best coverman. The second-year starter is a candidate for the Thorpe and Bednarik Awards and has already matched his interception total from ’06 (2). The other corner is junior Michael Ray Garvin (5-8, 180) who doubles as a sprinter for the FSU track team.
The safeties, Roger Williams (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Myron Rolle (6-2, 215, So.) are both second-year starters. Williams led the Seminoles in interceptions in ’06 and is the team’s No.2 tackler this year (26). Rolle is an outstanding talent who earned first-team, freshman All-America honors in ’06.
FSU’s kicking game is much improved from a year ago. Graham Gano, who punts and kicks off, is counted on heavily and he’s produced. The junior is averaging 41 yards a punt and has placed six inside the 20-yard line. He’s also recorded seven touchbacks in 20 kickoffs.
Kicker Gary Cismesia (5-11, 210, Sr.) has made 73 percent of his career field goal attempts, including 6-of-7 this year. His longest made field goal of ’07 is a 40-yarder.
Parker ranks among the nation’s leaders in punt returns (32nd), averaging almost 13 yards per attempt while Garvin has used his sprinters speed to average 22 yards per kickoff return.
