RALEIGH, N.C. Defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions Darrion Caldwell and Ryan Goodman will change weight classes in 2007-08, but both still figure prominently in the national rankings.
Caldwell, the ACC’s Wrestler of the Year as a freshman 141-pounder a year ago, will move up in weight this year, probably to 149 pounds. Goodman, meanwhile, a two-time conference champion at 197 pounds, will drop down to 184 for his junior season. Both, however, enter the 2007-08 season ranked in the preseason poll released today by USA Today, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and Intermat.
Caldwell, who went 20-6 a year ago and set a school record with 10 pins as a freshman, is ranked No. 10 at 149 pounds. Assuming Caldwell does wrestle at 149 (he could wind up at 157 instead), he will face bouts against No. 6 Brent Metcalf of Iowa, No. 8 Jake Patascil of Purdue, and No. 12 Will Rowe of Oklahoma. And that’s just in the dual-match portion of the schedule. The Pack will be traveling to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitaitonal in November and early December, and to Greensboro in late December for the Southern Scuffle. Both of those early-season tournaments features some of the top wrestlers in the nation.
Goodman is the two-time defending conference champion at 184 pounds, went 22-4 a year ago and has a 44-10 record at that weight, but will drop down to 184 this season. He enters the season ranked No. 14 at 184 and during the season he will face No. 11 Rocco Caponi of Virginia, No. 15 Josh Weitzel of Oklahoma, and No. 16 Joe Williams of Michigan State.
The Wolfpack wrestling team will begin the season November 10 with the NC State Open at Reynolds Coliseum.
