NC State Wrestling Sweeps Three At NC State Duals

RALEIGH, N.C. — Kody Hamrah and Jainor Palma won three bouts each, and Ryan Goodman and Joe Caramanica won twice without a loss Saturday as the NC State wrestling team swept matches from Drexel, South Dakota State and Gardner-Webb at the annual NC State duals at Reynolds Coliseum.
Wrestling with three regulars out of the lineup, the Wolfpack defeated Drexel 20-13, downed South Dakota State 32-17, and capped the day by thumping Gardner-Webb 38-13. The Pack was without freshman 141-pounder Darrion Caldwell, sophomore 165-pounder Obie Simpson, and senior 174-pounder Rick Brownlee.
Hamrah, ranked 20th at 157 pounds, had the biggest win of the day for the Wolfpack, taking a 9-1 major decision over 13th-ranked Ryan Hluschak of Drexel. Hamrah also downed South Dakota State’s Nick Herboldt 7-1 and G-W’s Garmanyou Nepto by technical fall.
Palma, ranked 17th at heavyweight, defeated Drexel’s Justin Terhune 7-5 in sudden victory overtime, then stopped South Dakota State’s Jason Stripling by injury default in a match Palma was winning handily at the time. He finished the day with an 8-0 major decision over Nick Roehnick of Gardner-Webb.
Goodwin, ranked No. 13 in the nation at 197, began the day with a workmanlike 3-1 decision over Drexel’s Jon Oplinger, and finished with a technical fall over Gardner-Webb’s Jordan Lowe. South Dakota State forfeited its bout at 197, with Goodman getting credit for the victory.
Caramanica won a major decision over Drexel’s Mark Cartella, 9-1. He sat out the South Dakota State bout, then pinned Gardner-Webb’s Irving Hernandez at the 1:25 mark.
NC State begins Atlantic Coast Conference action on Wednesday, January 10 with a 7:30 match vs. Duke at Reynolds Coliseum.
