RALEIGH, N.C. — NC State won four of the last five matches Saturday, cruising through the heart of the Newberry lineup and nailing down a 34-12 victory over the Indians in college wrestling action at Reynolds Coliseum.
Newberry, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, trailed just 13-9 after five matches and had its five best wrestlers waiting to take the mat. Newberry’s starters in the upper five weight classifications came into the match with a combined record of 79-22, but the Wolfpack recorded three pins and handily won four of the five matches to roll to the easy victory.
With the win, NC State has won five matches in a row and improved to 7-4 on the season. Newberry fell to 11-3-1.
The Wolfpack got the match off to a quick start, thanks to the Cummings brothers at 125 and 133 pounds. Taylor, a redshirt-freshman at 125, picked up a quick technical fall over Chauncey McElheney, leading 17-0 when the match was stopped with 18 seconds remaining in the first period. Cummings improved to 7-5 with the win.
Garrett Cummings, a senior 133-pounder, got a reversal and two takedowns in the third period to take a 15-4 major decision over Ernie Young, who gave Cummings, now 10-6 at 133, three points for stalling and a point for riding time.
Newberry’s Tony Washington turned a simple decision at 141 into a pin when he took the Wolfpack’s Jake Smith down to his back late in the final period and got the pin with five seconds left in the bout. That cut the team lead to 9-6, but Joe Caramanica gave the Pack a 13-6 lead with a 12-2 major decision over Latra Collick at 149. Caramanica, who improved to 11-4, got a takedown and a three-point near fall in the bout’s opening seconds and held an 8-2 lead after one period.
With junior 157-pounder Kody Hamrah out of the lineup for NC State, the Indians got three points back when Jesse Creed took a 6-5 decision over Chris Gambino, wrestling in his first collegiate match. Gambino got a pair of takedowns in the final minute of the match, but Creed hung on to get the decision.
That cut the Wolfpack lead to 13-9, but Jalil Dozier, wrestling for injured starter Obie Simpson at 165, pinned Newberry’s Brandon Kelly at the 1:41 mark to make it 19-9. Dozier improved to 2-6 with the win .Quinn Tolbert picked up Newberry’s final win of the afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Randy Goodman at 174 pounds, getting takedowns in the first and third periods. The loss dropped Goodman to 1-7.
Jeremy Colbert got a quick takedown and near fall against Newberry’s Keeno Griffin at 184, and took a 5-2 advantage into the third period. Colbert took Griffin down to start the third, let Griffin up, and then took him down for the final time a minute into the period. He got the fall at the 5:37 mark to lift his record to 4-6. Colbert’s win mathematically clinched the team score for the Wolfpack, which led 25-12 at that point with just two bouts remaining.
Sophomore Ryan Goodman, ranked No. 13 nationally, improved his record to 11-1 with an easy pin of the Indians’ Kelly Anundson just 69 seconds into the match. Wolfpack heavyweight Jainor Palma got a solid, workmanlike 4-0 decision over Cy Wainwright in the final match of the day. Palma, now 16-3, got an escape and a takedown in the final period, and had one point for riding time.
NC State now will take five days off to prepare for a pair of huge tests next weekend. The Wolfpack will travel to Chapel Hill on Friday night for a 7 p.m. bout against North Carolina, then will host 25th-ranked Navy on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
