Raleigh, N.C. - Week 1 of the NFL season was filled with excitement for many former Wolfpack players, from rookies making their professional debut, to Philip Rivers starting his first NFL game which just happened to be nationally televised on Monday Night Football. Here are some of the standout performances from former NC State football players in Week 1:
• Philip Rivers made his first NFL start in a Monday Night Football contest with the San Diego Chargers winning at Oakland, 27-0. Rivers went 8-of-11 for 108 yards, including a touchdown pass to Antonio Gates. Former Pack wideout Alvis Whitted was in the starting lineup for Oakland, and had one catch for 12 yards.
• A pair of former Wolfpack wideouts helped each of their coaches win in their debuts. Jerricho Cotchery caught six balls for 65 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown just before halftime, in helping Eric Mangini’s NY Jets to a 23-16 win over Tennessee. Torry Holt led the Rams with seven catches for 80 yards in a 18-10 win over Denver in Scott Linehan’s debut.
• Torry’s younger brother Terrence had a big day with the Detroit Lions, despite the team's 9-6 loss to Seattle. Terrence led the Lions with 10 tackles on the day, including seven solo stops, and helped hold last years NFC champions to just three field goals.
• Two former Wolfpack defenders faced off in Arizona, as Adrian Wilson’s Arizona Cardinals came away with a 34-27 win over Manny Lawson and the San Francisco 49ers. Wilson finished with five tackles including one sack, while Lawson had six solo stops.
• No. 1 draft choice Mario Williams posted three tackles for the Texans in a 24-10 loss to Philadelphia.
• Koren Robinson found a new home this week, signing a deal with the Green Bay Packers.
• One injury note, Dovonte Edwards of the Minnesota Vikings broke his arm in the preseason and is expected to miss at least the first month of the season.
