The Norris Notebook: (Not) Running on Empty
8/16/2006 12:00:00 AM | Football
Today was a day that had Andre Brown and Toney Baker as hot as the weather. Both backs made big plays all day, and Jamelle Eugene also continued to get touches and make the most of it. The defense again made big stops at the goal line to end practice and the guys made their way off the field around noon. They come back to the field on Thursday for another two-a-day, the second of the fall camp.
The coaches kept a quick tempo at practice all day, as the guys have really responded to the message of urgency and effort that head coach Chuck Amato has been preaching.
AJ Davis picked off a pass and would have returned it for a touchdown before the play was blown dead during an early period of 11 on 11. AJ also broke up another pass on a crossing route by Jarvis Williams. James Martin snagged an early PBU as well, breaking up a Justin Burke offering at one point.
The wide receivers worked extensively on blocking for the run and up field after a reception. WR coach Dwayne Dixon and graduate assistant Thomas Cox were going to try and sling the wideouts down to the ground as they were blocking, but Dixon decided not to try it on John Dunlap, easily the biggest and strongest of the wideouts.
Dunlap made an outstanding catch down field on a perfect deep ball from Marcus Stone for the catch of the day.
During board drills I focused on watching the big boys for the most part, with Jeraill McCuller getting as low as his big frame could get when it was his turn.
Former defensive line teammates Matt Kushner (who is now a tight end) and Martrel Brown had a good, tough battle during boards, with Martrel moving his feet and finally knocking Kush off the board.
Andre Brown had a nice burst to the outside on 11 on 11 from the 20 yardline, and he scored despite losing his shoe in the process. Baker also had his share of nice, tough runs, but he got hit in midair during the last period of goalline by Matrel as the defense ended practice with a big stop.
More tomorrow as two-a-day number two starts with an 8:40 am kickoff at practice.
Assistant media relations director Pat Norris will check in with his preseason football practice notebook during fall camp.
